Welcome to Term 3 Health!
Welcome to Term 3 Health!
Dear Parents,
Welcome to the 3rd term of Ms Fletchers Year 8 Health class! This term we will be looking at a range of topics including, alcohol and other drugs, relationships and sexuality and food and nutrition.
First up, is our unit on food and nutrition where we will be addressing how food can enhance our health and wellbeing. The content within this unit supports students to develop knowledge, understanding and skills to make healthy, informed food choices and to explore the contextual factors that influence eating habits and food choices. We will be working closely with the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating (AGHE) as a guideline to explore a variety of subtopics that include:
- Food groups and recommendations for healthy eating (including The Australian Guide to Healthy Eating
- Food labelling and packaging
- Food advertising
- Personal, social, economic and cultural influences on food choices and eating habits
- Strategies for planning and maintaining a healthy, balanced diet
- Sustainable food choices that encourage healthy lifelong nutritional habits
Alongside our unit on food and nutrition, we will also be investigating intellectual property (IP) and why it is important to attribute and reference digital sources and information. As well as, understand how to find and use reliable/credible sources and the legal obligations involved. Students will then be required to design a magazine article that focuses on encouraging healthy eating by analysing the nutritional information from popular fast food choices and providing delicious healthy alternatives.
Whilst students will be graded on their knowledge and understanding around food choices, they will also be graded on their ability to demonstrate the correct use of IP. For example, students will need to research different fast food outlets, then gather information and images to engage magazine readers. This relates to the ICT General Capabilities from the Australian Curriculum, 'apply social and ethical protocols and practices when using ICT', specifically speaking the sub-element ‘Recognise intellectual property’. At the beginning of the year each student was assessed on their level of learning within the ICT general capabilities. After assessment it was clear that many students were deficient in the sub-element 'recognising intellectual property'. Therefore, the unit incorporates this element to ensure students are proficient in this area.
Below is the rubric that will be used to assess student learning regarding healthy food choices and the correct use of IP. As you can see, students will be assessed on two different components.
- Analysing food choices- Students ability to critique and evaluate different food choices and make recommendations
- Intellectual property- Students ability to use and apply intellectual property to their magazine article by attributing images and applying creative commons (CC).

Within the rubric you will see that students are graded on their ability to use and apply intellectual property to their magazine article by attributing images and applying their own creative commons license (CC). This relates directly to level 5 of the ICT learning continuum- in other words, where students should be at by the end of year 8! Therefore, students that are competent will be able to recognise someone else’s digital ownership of a piece of work and will be able to demonstrate this by stating who created the image, where it is from and the copyright license that applies. It is expected that the majority of the class should be at this level, however, some students may also excel due to previous exposure or knowledge around ICT. Just as some students may be below the standard due to minimal experience with ICT in previous years e.g. minimal exposure in primary school. But do not worry, this will not be a problem!
If you are reading this and thinking “What on earth is she on about?! What is this CC thing?” then I have provided a simple definition below to keep you up to speed!
Creative Commons (CC)- A Creative Commons (CC) license is one of several public copyright licenses that enable the free distribution of an otherwise copyrighted work. A CC license is used when an author wants to give people the right to share, use, and build upon a work that they have created, providing the user acknowledges the original owners work! Students will be using the Creative Commons website to source images for their healthy eating magazine article, therefore it is important that they can attribute these images correctly. Students will also be able to create their own appropriate CC license to copyright their own work.
Below is a list of resources that students will need to use throughout this unit for both the food and nutrition content and intellectual property content:
- Creative commons website: https://creativecommons.org/
As part of our unit, students will need to be able to source images and attribute them appropriately, as well as create their own CC license for their magazine article. To achieve this, we will be working closely with the Creative Commons website linked above. - GoogleDrive: https://www.google.com/drive/Students will need to be able to demonstrate their ability to save their work to an online cloud. They will have access to GoogleDrive through their school email address and have had lessons on how to operate the system. The assignment task sheet and rubric will also be accessible via GoogleDrive. A link to the GoogleDrive website has been provided above.
- Australian Guidelines to Healthy Eating https://www.eatforhealth.gov.au/guidelines/australian-guide-healthy-eatingThe Australian Dietary Guidelines give advice on eating for health and wellbeing. They’re called dietary guidelines because it’s your usual diet that influences your health. Based on the latest scientific evidence, they describe the best approach to eating for a long and healthy life. Students will need access to these guidelines to ensure they are able to complete their assignment.
I look forward to another successful term with your children! If you have any questions or comments regarding anything mentioned above, please post them in the comments section at the end of the page! I will get back to them as quickly as I can, however, please note that all comments will need to be approved by admin for moderation.
Kind regards,
Ms Fletcher :)
